It was concerning to read that NHS buildings in Fife need almost £180m of maintenance. Fortunately the Prime Minister has today announced a £1.8 billion funding package to upgrade hospitals and health facilities in England.
Thanks to the Barnett Formula, the Scottish Government will receive a proportional funding boost. Devolution means the Scottish Government decides how such Barnett Consequentials are spent, and in the past, it has often chosen not to use such money for the same services as the equivalent sum was spent on in England.
I hope Fife’s SNP and Labour coalition will waste no time in urging their paymasters in the Scottish Government to pass up whatever vanity project happens to be the nationalist flavour of the month, and instead reserve the latest Barnett windfall exclusively for the Scottish NHS.
