No one can be surprised that Nicola Sturgeon reached for what has become the standard nationalist refrain to Alex Salmond’s tribulations, namely that “the independence movement is bigger than any one man”.
By adding that it is also “bigger than any one woman”, is the First Minister also acknowledging the questions about her own knowledge and potential complicity which instantly mushroomed when the plethora of criminal charges against her predecessor and closest brother-in-arms were revealed last week?
Time was when the SNP in particular, and independence in general, used to be presented as an alternative to the cesspit of sleaze and cover-up which supposedly characterised Westminster. Nationalists’ new-found silence on this theme is deafening.
